NISC Scoring Rules Summary

2025–2026 Season · Sponsored by Chicagoland Glider Council

Contest Period

  • Season runs October 1 – September 30
  • Monthly rankings: April through October only
  • Cumulative standings use each pilot's top 5 flights

Eligible Flights

  • Must depart from Chicago Glider Club, Windy City Soaring, or Sky Soaring
  • IGC file must be uploaded to WeGlide no later than 12:00 PM local, 2 days after landing
  • All pilots must have an active WeGlide account
  • DAeC glider handicaps applied per WeGlide scoring rules

Two Scoring Categories

WeGlide Free
  • Scored exclusively via WeGlide's Free scoring system
  • Raw points = Free Distance (1.0 pt/km) + Area Bonus (best of FAI or O&R)
  • FAI triangle: 0.3 pt/km  |  Out & Return: 0.2 pt/km
  • Final score = Raw pts × 100 ÷ DMSt Index (min 50 pts)
Tasks
  • Task must be declared on flight recorder or WeGlide before flying
  • Ranked by average task speed (km/h)
  • Best single task per pilot per scoring period counts
  • WeGlide Premium required to host local competitions

Water Ballast

  • Water ballast is permitted
  • NISC override: ballasted flights are scored as if all takeoff water was carried for the entire flight, even if dumped en route
  • Takeoff weight must be entered on WeGlide if any ballast is carried
  • Note: the in-page Free Score Calculator computes a dry-weight score; ballasted flights may score differently on WeGlide

WeGlide Free Formula

Distance Raw Pts= Distance (km) × 1.0
FAI Bonus= FAI Distance × 0.3
O&R Bonus= O&R Distance × 0.2
Area Bonus= max(FAI Bonus, O&R Bonus)
Final Score= (Distance Pts + Area Bonus) × 100 ÷ DMSt Index
Minimum Score= 50 pts

FAI Triangle Requirements

  • Shortest leg ≥ 28% of total FAI distance
  • If distance ≥ 500 km: shortest leg ≥ 25%, longest leg ≤ 45%
  • Flight path is "closed" if finish is within 1 km of start
  • Start altitude may not exceed finish altitude by more than 1,000 m

Awards

  • Season champion recognized at Chicagoland Glider Council meeting
  • Top 3 monthly pilots recognized via mass email after each scoring month
  • Additional recognition for best new/youth pilot, most improved, etc.

How to Get Started

Everything you need to participate in the NISC contest

Step 1 — Create a WeGlide Account

All NISC scoring is handled through WeGlide. Every participant must have an active WeGlide account.

  1. Go to weglide.org/auth/sign-up
  2. Enter your name, email, and a password
  3. Confirm your email address via the link they send
  4. Complete your pilot profile — add your home airport (one of: Chicago Glider Club, Windy City Soaring, or Sky Soaring) and your glider type

WeGlide Premium is optional, but recommended if you plan to fly declared tasks with multiple pilots on the same day. Premium unlocks "local competitions," which automatically score everyone who flew the same task together.

Step 2 — Register Your SSA Number (Optional, but Recommended)

If you're a member of the Soaring Society of America (SSA), linking your SSA number on WeGlide unlocks additional benefits:

  • Your flights automatically count toward the SSA OLC (Online Contest) and SSA State Records program
  • Recognition of your SSA rating and awards on your WeGlide profile
  • Access to SSA-member-only contests and rankings within WeGlide

To register your SSA number:

  1. Log into your WeGlide account
  2. Go to your profile settings (click your avatar, then "Settings")
  3. Find the "Memberships" or "Associations" section
  4. Add your SSA membership number and save

Not an SSA member yet? You can join at ssa.org.

Step 3 — Upload Your Flights

After each flight, you'll need to upload your IGC file to WeGlide. An IGC file is the standard flight recording format used by all approved flight recorders.

  1. Download the IGC file from your flight recorder (LX, LXNAV, ClearNav, XCSoar, etc.)
  2. Log into WeGlide and click the "+" button (top right) → "Upload Flight"
  3. Drag and drop the IGC file, or click to browse and select it
  4. WeGlide auto-detects the takeoff airport, glider, and date
  5. If you carried water ballast, you must enter your takeoff weight — NISC rules require all water to be scored as if it was carried the entire flight
  6. Review the automatic scoring and click "Upload"

Important: Flights must be uploaded no later than 12:00 PM local time, two days after the flight to count for NISC scoring. Late uploads will not be scored.

Step 4 — Declare Tasks (For Task Scoring)

The Task category scores flights where a pilot declared a task in advance. You have two ways to declare a task:

Option A: On Your Flight Recorder

  1. Program the task into your flight computer before takeoff (turnpoints, start, finish)
  2. The task is embedded in the IGC file automatically
  3. When you upload to WeGlide, it will recognize the declared task and score accordingly

Option B: On WeGlide

  1. Before your flight, log into WeGlide and declare a task through the web interface
  2. Fly your flight (and upload the IGC as usual)
  3. WeGlide will automatically match your flight to the declared task

Note: If you declare a task on WeGlide AND a different one on your flight recorder, WeGlide's declaration wins — your flight will be scored against the WeGlide-declared task.

Tip: When multiple pilots plan to fly the same task, create a "Local Competition" on WeGlide (WeGlide Premium required). Everyone who flies that task gets automatically ranked together.

You're All Set

Once your account is active and you've uploaded your first flight, you'll automatically appear in the standings. Scores update as new flights come in, and monthly winners are announced via the NISC mailing list at the end of each scoring month (April through October).
